“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” – Robert Collier
Kelly Hickmann has had an exciting life so far, graduating high school early then deciding he wanted to explore and what better way of going that than hiking the Appalachian trail which is a trail that goes from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katadhin, Maine and in total is about 2,200 miles long. His end goal was to live in the mountains somehow.
“Sales are contingent upon the attitude of the salesperson – not the attitude of the prospect.” – W. Clement Stone
While doing some research on sales during this past week I went on a rabbit trail into the history of sales. This was completely accidental but I thought why not make a blog post about it. So without further ado here it is!
“A good plan is like a road map: it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there.” – H Stanley Judd
Before I start, I want to lead with sales in a wonderful area to be in. Despite what most people think I have found that you can go almost anywhere from a job in sales. If you put in the work you have the ability to go into a plethora of different roles or move up through the ranks of sales.
“What you lack in talent can be made up with desire, hustle, and giving 110% all the time.” – Don Zimmer
Leah Wilczewski is one of five kids she danced, played piano and acted for her entire childhood. She did ballet from age three to twelve, but at the age of twelve, she felt like she wasn’t being challenged enough mentally anymore. She loved the way the music felt when dancing and how she was in a piece of artwork. She wrestled with this while she saw acting students continue working on stuff and improving which ballet was no longer giving her.
“Sales is not about selling anymore, but about building trust and education.” – Silva Devaki
While researching sales I found that most people want to change people’s perception about sales and show that it is so much more than simply just a sleazy salesman. I know that I learned a lot, for my own experience with sales is limited to door-to-door salespeople, a blender demonstration at Costco, and the brief watching QVC whenever flipping through channels. My view of sales was so tunnel vision that I didn’t let myself see the strategies, the relationship building and everything all goes on behind the scenes that I find intriguing.
“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.” – Earl Nightingale
The road to an operations manager is a windy path, and people rarely start off their careers hoping or planning to go into operations. Mark Swiggum, manager of business operations at StackSocial wanted to be an NBA star, Kalisa Martin has a major in food science, and Christopher Peters graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music. They all stumbled their way into operations and are very grateful they did.
“Our business is about technology, yes. But its also about operations and customer relationships.” – Micheal Dell
Operations management is a relatively new term, having little stature surrounding it until the 20th century, although its beginnings can be traced back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Adam Smith is credited as one of the first people to address the issues of operations management in 1776.
Sean struggled in high school, he dropped out of college and had little guidance from the authority figures in his life. His high school dream was to be a professional baseball player. How on earth did he make it to the title of Director of Construction Operations at Colorado Asphalt Services Incorporated? It was a long journey, and he has had a plethora of jobs in construction, the navy, estimation, power plants, and all through the ranks of operations.
“Growth and comfort do not coexist.” – Ginni Rometty
It is absolutely crazy to think that month one of Praxis is over, it feels as if I was just starting yesterday. This past month has been a whirlwind in almost every aspect of my life and I am thrilled that Praxis was apart of it all. I am already extremely grateful that I was given the opportunity to do this program, and provided ability to grow and learn so much in a short amount of time.
