The Memory Jar

“A year may be easy, but its days are hard indeed.” – Naomi Alderman

For the past three years, I have kept a jar full of memories and you should start one right now. Here is why.

Each time something big or important happens in my life I write it down and the date that it happened on a piece of paper and I fold it up and put it in the jar. I do the same with event/movie tickets or just fun moments that have happened.

One example is at a sleepover we were playing a game and one of the challenges was to write as many states in alphabetical order on a piece of paper. One of my friends wrote down Connecticut as Coneticic.  When I saw it I honestly almost peed myself I was laughing so hard.

At the end of each year, I take it all out and look at it. I read over all of the papers and everything that is in it. All of the memories instantly flood back, whether they are good or bad. I have gone from crying to laughing in a matter of seconds throughout reading everything.

Life is a lovely thing, so much happens that we forget about. Sometimes all it takes is a little piece of paper and a date to bring it all back.

I cannot suggest that people have one of these jars more. It has brought into perspective how much can change in a year. I mean this time last year I was still dancing full time and at a community college
