“You never really leave the place you love. You take part of it with you and leave part of you there.” – Unknown
I have moved a lot in my life I am pretty sure I am on my eleventh house right now. Although when we first started moving a lot I was ten and it was quite difficult for me. I had a really hard time making friends and getting settled. I taught me way more than I ever expected it to.
Here are a few of the things that it taught me:
- How to pack fast
- Change is inevitable
- How to unpack fast
- Downsize your stuff as much as possible
- How to connect with people/get out of my bubble
- Be thankful for the little things
- It is necessary to get out and explore
I now can pack all of my stuff in about four boxes. I only need about two days to pack and unpack. For my last move, we had a maintenance guy come over the day after we moved. He was thoroughly impressed with how fast we had gotten settled.
After the first move I was such a shy sheltered child scared of almost everything but through all of the moves, it helped me gain a solid foundation and confidence in myself. The ability to walk up and introduce myself to someone was completely foreign and terrifying but it does not shake me up as much as it did before.
I have come a long way since I was ten and I can honestly thank moving for a lot of the growth. Although this is not really a skill that is demanded of you very often. It is something that teaches you a lot and I highly suggest that everyone goes through it a few times in their life. It truly shaped me to be who I am today.
