What Can Unhealed Trauma Look Like?

“Healing trauma involves tears. The tears release our pain. The tears are part of our recovery. My friend, please let your tears flow.” – Dana Arcuri

Trauma is a weird and complicated thing. After reading The Body Keeps The Score I’m even more amazed by our brains and bodies than before but also shocked at the amount of trauma humans go through.

Below is a list of what unhealed trauma can look like:

  • Low sense of self-worth
  • Codependency in relationships, both romantic and platonic
  • Fear of being abandoned
  • Putting your needs aside for others
  • Craving external validation
  • An innate feeling of shame or embarrassment
  • Always fearing what might happen next
  • Thinking that the worst is going to happen
  • Resisting positive changes
  • Consistently feeling numb
  • Trouble making decisions
  • Tolerating abusive behavior from others
  • Difficulty asserting yourself and your boundaries
  • Being overly agreeable
  • Unable to tolerate conflict, even if it isn’t yours

Trauma isn’t something to take lightly, it alters your brain and takes time to heal. You cannot rush the process but you do have to start the process. Sitting on the sidelines of your own story and healing process is a disservice to yourself.
